NSW takes important first step to kicking tobacco habit

Media release: 27 November 2012

The Greens welcomed the O'Farrell government's decision to dump direct and
indirect state investments in the tobacco industry but called on Treasurer
Mike Baird to support their bill to force State Super to join the quit
campaign.

Greens NSW MP John Kaye said: "After being caught with $27 million of
tobacco shares in the NSW Treasury Corporation funds, the NSW government
has finally agreed to rid itself of investments in an industry that kills
half of those who use the product as directed.

"In a big victory for public health and government integrity, total
government tobacco holdings of $66 million will come to an end after
pressure from the anti-smoking lobby and the Greens.

"While I strongly disagree with Treasurer Mike Baird on the devastation he
is bringing to public education and health services, on this matter I
congratulate him for doing the right thing.

"Labor refused to act for 16 years, claiming that their holdings were not
significant.

"State Super still invests $158 million in the tobacco industry.
Contributions from retired and current public sector workers are propping
up an industry that kills more than 5,000 people a year in NSW.

"If State Super declines the request to join the quit campaign, the Greens
will be introducing legislation when parliament sits again in February to
force it to divest.

"If Health Minister Jillian Skinner and Treasurer Mike Baird are serious
about their commitment to get the state out of tobacco they will support
our legislation.

"This is more than just sending a message to young people.

"Pulling piblic funds out of tobacco will deny the industry access to
important capital.

"Private investors should join with the O'Farrell government and quit the
habit.

"Smoke free workplaces have provided welcome relief for employees. Smoke
free investments should also help clear the air," Dr Kaye said.
