Roozendaal ignoring the new reality on electricity sale

Media release: 1 September 2010

NSW Treasurer Eric Roozendaal is ignoring the reality that the
government's Owen Inquiry, used to justify electricity privatisation,
got its forecasts horribly wrong, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Dr Kaye said: “For the third year in a row the Australian Energy Market
Operator has pushed back by a year the forecast date of NSW hitting peak
load capacity for electricity.

"Treasurer Roozendaal avoided answering a question in the NSW Upper
House from me today seeking his response to AEMO's latest forecast.

"It was the doomsday scenario of electricity shortages peddled by
Professor Anthony Owen's inquiry that is being used to justify selling
the state's publicly owned electricity assets, including the retailers,
generation trading rights and development sites for future power
stations.

"With the Owen inquiry now thoroughly discredited, Treasurer Roozendaal
should abandon the lost cause of electricity privatisation before the
people of NSW lose their power assets in a fire sale.

"Keeping control of electricity development, pricing and billing is far
more important than the ALP building a war chest through an unnecessary
sale of the state's power assets.

"The latest forecast from AEMO proves that NSW does not need new base
load power supply," Dr Kaye said.
