Keneally's Dragons cash should go to disability sport: Greens
Media release: 11 October 2010
The Keneally government's $13 million handout to spend on corporate boxes and other facilities at Kogarah-Jubilee Oval would be better spent on funding disability sport, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "St George Leagues Club is already awash with cash. Its pokie machines are big earners.
"The Football club has reaped over half a million dollars in prize money from finals appearances.
"It is obscene to give this club, backed by a cashed-up leagues club, get more public money when there is much greater need in the community.
"Premier Keneally has made the wrong call on this issue. If St George cannot stand on its own feet financially it should get out of the Rugby League business.
"Meanwhile disabled sports relying on charities and community fundraising have missed out on funds that could potentially transform lives," Dr Kaye said.
