Greens MLC Colleen Hartland tabled a community petition against Westlink
in parliament today after uncovering government documents that indicate a
flawed basis for government claims that the public supports Westlink.
"There were 135 signatures on the petition from community members that I
tabled in parliament today."
"This week I uncovered the questions asked in a government survey that was
clearly designed to get a positive answer so that the government could
pretend the public supports this expensive, damaging lemon of a project."
*
"I asked for the telephone survey script to be tabled in parliament
because it was so suspicious that it was missing from the public
consultation reports."
"The script includes a great bit of push-polling at taxpayer expense about
government projects that have nothing to do with Westlink."
"The whole survey is set up to get a false show of support for Westlink,
by avoiding any mention of the alternatives."
"The survey basically takes people by the hand, asks them how much they
get stuck in traffic, tells them Westlink is the answer then asks them how
much they want it."
"They didn't ask whether people would prefer the five billion dollar cost
of westlink to be spent on public transport infrastructure."
"There's nothing about the extra pollution and trucks, the noise and the
damage to homes that Westlink would cause."
