ACT off the rails

ACT Greens Transport Spokesperson Amanda Bresnan MLA has pointed to Shell Oil's decision to shift from rail to road as evidence that our railways need more public investment.

"Shell has made an economic decision which might suit them in the short term, but is bad for the rest of us" Ms Bresnan said today.

"Shell's decision to abandon storage in the ACT, and shift its fuel transport from rail to road will make Canberra dependent on just-in-time fuel delivery which is more perilous, more uncertain and more damaging to our environment.

"I don't believe this would be happening if the rail links to Canberra were up to standard.

"There's a lot of talk about a very fast rail link sometime in the future. Right now however we have a more immediate problem. I'd like to see the ACT Government and transport economist get together to campaign for a fast enough train. Increased federal rail funding would get some of these heavy tankers off our roads and everyone would benefit," Ms Bresnan said.
