Dalai Lama should get Honorary Degree: Brown

Australian Greens Leader Senator Bob Brown has urged the University of
Tasmania to proceed with offering an Honorary Decree to his Holiness the
Dalai Lama.

Senator Brown said that the University of Tasmania first held
discussions with the Dalai Lama in 2007 about the possibility of an
Honorary Degree being conferred during the Dalai Lama's visit to
Tasmania in December this year.

"The idea was accepted by His Holiness, and was referred to on the Dalai
Lama's website until as late as today." (attached)

"It is very concerning to find that since the initial meeting in 2007, a
meeting has occurred with representatives of the Chinese Consulate at
which concern at the possibility of conferring the Honorary Degree was
raised."

Senator Brown called on the University of Tasmania to proceed with
conferring the degree.

"The Dalai Lama is a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and would do a
great honour to the University and Tasmania if he were to accept a
degree."
