Polluters' auction in Jurassic Park
Monday 10 August 2009
Malcolm Turnbull's proposals to sandbag polluters even further than
Kevin Rudd's Continue Polluting Regardless Scheme have launched a
polluters' auction in Parliament's Jurassic Park, the Australian Greens
said today.
"The old parties are closing ranks with the old polluters against the
climate and the community," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator
Christine Milne, said.
"This polluters' auction between the old parties will cost the community
very dearly.
"Every dollar to polluters is a dollar less for the community. Every
dollar used to sandbag polluters means the community will face a greater
climate crisis.
"Malcolm Turnbull doesn't think Mr Rudd's 95% free permits to big
polluters is enough - he wants to give them 100%, and not reduce that
over time. And he wants to auction even fewer permits than Mr Rudd.
"The old parties, who pride themselves on their economic credentials,
are proposing massive market distortions which will make the climate
effort more expensive and less efficient.
"It is the Greens, with our calls for 100% auctioning of permits, who
are proposing the clearest market signal.
"The old parties have completely lost sight of what emissions trading is
supposed to do.
"Polluters should be paying for the damage they do so that the community
can afford to fix it.
"Mr Turnbull has to explain how his baseline and credit scheme - an idea
which has been tried and rejected around the globe - will link up with
the cap and trade scheme, and how it will deliver environmental
certainty.
"Mr Turnbull's move to lift the unconditional emissions reduction target
to 10% is welcome, if a small step, and Mr Rudd should immediately match
it.
"However, it is the upper end of the target which matters most to the
planet, and both old parties are way behind the science in rejecting the
40% cuts we clearly need in order to protect the climate."
