The Tasmanian Greens today responded to the TCCI's release of the first
stage of it's Taxation and Expenditure review, Tasmania: An imperative
for reform, saying that it is clear that State Labor's claim to being
wise budget managers is becoming increasingly shaky.
Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson Nick McKim MP said that the
Report's findings that the average Tasmanian family is approximately
$40,000 worse off than the average mainland family, and "that the
average Tasmanian is ten years behind the average mainland Australian",
is an indictment on the failure of ten years of Labor government to
grasp opportunities to reform the state's economy base to put it on a
sustainable basis.[i]
"This Report released by the TCCI explodes Labor's rhetoric that they
are the best State budget managers Tasmania has ever seen," Mr McKim
said.
"According to this report shows that the average Tasmanian family is
approximately $40,000 worse off than the average mainland family, and
"that the average Tasmanian is ten years behind the average mainland
Australian", which is a stinging indictment on the last ten years of a
Tasmanian Labor government."
"It is quite clear that Labor has squandered it's time in office for the
past 10 years, and has failed to grasp opportunities to transform
Tasmania's economy to put it on a long-term sustainable basis."
"An additional challenge now for the Bartlett government is that posed
by the current global economic market uncertainty, and the Greens
reiterate that this economic downturn provides Labor with an opportunity
to show strategic leadership by encouraging businesses based around
improving sustainability."
"The Bartlett government should prioritise bringing forward
infrastructure spends in areas that will reduce Tasmania's greenhouse
emissions and provide social benefit, increase investment in training
for green collar jobs, and provide greater assistance to low income
Tasmanians to reduce their power bills by investing in solar and energy
efficiency."
"The Greens welcome the release of the TCCI report, and will examine
closely it's findings and recommendations," Mr McKim said.
