The Tasmanian Greens today continued to apply pressure on the Bartlett
government to rule out forced amalgamation of local Councils, following
reports that Premier Bartlett believes Council amalgamation is both
"necessary and inevitable".

Greens Shadow Local Government spokesperson Tim Morris MP said voluntary
cooperative sharing arrangements between Councils are a far better way
to achieve cost savings and efficiencies at the local government level,
while also allowing local communities to retain their identity.

"The Greens are committed to supporting, not forcing, our Local
Councils," Mr Morris said.

"What is it about amalgamations that cannot be achieved through
voluntary cooperative arrangements?"

"The Greens call on Premier Bartlett to re-consider the benefits
available through cooperation and rule out forcing amalgamations onto
local Councils and communities," said Mr Morris.
