Water not Coal Forum
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon speaks on polluting mining companies
What: Water not Coal Forum, organised by Rivers SOS
When: 9.30am-4.30pm, Saturday 25 October 2008. Lee speaks from 10.45-11.30am
Where: Meeting Room, Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL.
Speakers include: Greens MP spokesperson Lee Rhiannon and academics, representatives from the Total Environment Centre, the National Parks Association and other key allied community groups.
Greens MP and mining spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said:
"The growth in coal mining across NSW risks our precious water supply.
"This forum enables coal mining communities and environmental advocates to come together and design a strategy to battle the expanding girth of NSW's mining industry.
"It takes resilience and grit from local communities to fight billion dollar mining companies and the NSW government. A forum like this provides us with energy and united direction.
"I will be reporting on new data showing an increase in incidences where mining companies fail to comply with NSW pollution laws.
"The Greens policy is for no new coal mines. We will continue to push for improved monitoring of mining companies and the prosecution of offences.
"The new Environment Minister Carmel Tebbutt needs to address the real need for additional EPA offices and staff involved in independent monitoring of mining companies," Ms Rhiannon said.
