The Tasmanian Greens today said that despite statements issued today by
the Premier and the Director of Public Prosecutions there is still no
further information in the public domain about the current governance
crisis in Tasmania than there was yesterday.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that he still believed that there is a
case for an independent review of matters associated with the current
loss of public confidence in governance, including Premier David
Bartlett's decision to appoint Richard McCreadie as temporary Police
Commissioner.
"It was the government's propensity to operate behind closed doors that
caused this mess, and for David Bartlett to come out and say 'trust me,
I'm the Premier, everything's fine' is not going to cut it, especially
as we have no further information about what actually occurred."
"No one is any the wiser about the events that precipitated this crisis
than we were prior to the meeting between the Premier and the DPP, and
the case for an independent review conducted by an impartial person
remains overwhelming."
"The DPP has still not clarified publicly what the 'close and current'
links between the Premier, Mr McCreadie and Mr Johnston are, and we
still do not know why Mr Bartlett decided to recommend Mr McCreadie as
temporary Police Commissioner in the first place."
Mr McKim reiterated that the Greens' call for an interim investigation
did not specifically include a review of any specific decision by the
DPP.
