The Tasmanian Greens today expressed serious concerns over Premier David
Bartlett's decision to appoint Richard McCreadie as Police Commissioner,
describing it as having destabilised Tasmania Police at a time when
continuity and confidence in senior management are crucial.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP demanded that Mr Bartlett release the legal
advice on which he is relying, saying that until this occurs there will
remain questions over the legality of the appointment.

"Until the Premier releases the legal advice he says he has, people will
continue to question the legality of the current arrangements with all
of the destabilising impact that will have on Tasmania Police," Mr McKim
said.

"The Premier claims that he wants stability, but his inexplicable
decision has had just the opposite effect."

Mr McKim also criticised the Premier's failure to consult with the
Police Association prior to the decision being made.

"This kind of failure to consult with key stakeholders was a hallmark of
the Lennon government, but it seems that under Labor, the more things
change, the more they stay the same."

"Mr Bartlett is yet to adequately explain why he made this appointment,
particularly as he must have known how badly it would destabilise
Tasmania Police."
