The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the release of TasCOSS' 2009/10
Tasmanian Budget submission and urged Premier David Bartlett to adopt
its recommendations, saying that its focus on public housing, public
transport and community support mirror the Greens' key policy
priorities.
Greens Opposition Leader Nick McKim MP said that increased investment
into public housing, health, transport, and energy efficiency both
assists sectors of the community who are the most needy, and will also
provide a broader benefit by providing a sustainability focus for an
economic stimulus package.
"If Premier Bartlett is serious about injecting funds and certainty into
Tasmania's economy then fully funding TasCOSS' key social inclusion
recommendations would be a very good place to begin," Mr McKim said.
"Ten years of Labor in Tasmania has seen the areas of public housing,
transport and other key areas feature repeatedly and with increasing
urgency in community Budget submissions, as successive governments have
continued to ignore the calls for meaningful action."
"TasCOSS' recommendations must be heeded by the Bartlett government, as
protecting vulnerable Tasmanians must take priority during these
uncertain economic times."
