Protesters send message to Marathon: your time is up

Environment and community groups, including the Wilderness Society,
Friends of the Earth and the Greens have staged a peaceful protest
outside the AGM of Marathon Resources, the company responsible for the
illegal dumping of waste in the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the
state's far north.

The protest comes as work continues in the Sanctuary excavating a series
of shallow pits the company filled with rubbish and radioactive waste.

Speaking outside the AGM, Greens MLC Mark Parnell, who has a Bill in
State Parliament that will ban all mining in Arkaroola, said: "Marathon
has well and truly run out of time.

"They have systematically trashed a geological monument listed on the
National Estate, in the centre of an iconic and award winning Wilderness
Sanctuary.

"They have been negligent and disrespectful and have lost their social
licence to continue their drilling activities.

"As soon as the clean up is complete, the Government must act quickly to
stop all remaining exploration activities in the Arkaroola Sanctuary.
The company must not be allowed to re-commence their invasive drilling
program.

"Once Marathon is out, the Arkaroola Sanctuary must be preserved, once
and for all, for future generations.

"Some places are too precious to mine. Marathon: your time is up," he
said.
