The Tasmanian Greens today said that Premier David Bartlett should be
supporting an Emissions Trading System (ETS) with no exemptions rather
than supporting exemptions for industry sectors including Nyrstar as he
did in the House of Assembly today.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the best outcome for Tasmania
would be a strong ETS with no exemptions introduced quickly, as it would
enable Tasmania to take advantage of the large proportion of our
electricity which is generated by renewable technologies.

"If Mr Bartlett is serious about positioning Tasmania to take advantage
of an ETS he should be calling for an inclusive scheme rather than being
bluffed by Nyrstar's sabre-rattling into supporting exemptions which
will lessen the scheme's effectiveness."

Mr McKim also called on Premier Bartlett to utilise his government's
close relationship with Nyrstar to clarify whether Nyrstar's modelling
had examined its South Australian and Tasmanian operations separately.

"As a strong and broad ETS would actually make Tasmanian operations more
competitive and it is very likely that Nyrstar's Tasmanian operations
would actually benefit from such a scheme."
