The Tasmanian Greens today said that the vehicles firebombed in the
Florentine Valley were are stark reminder of the need for calm in
Tasmania's forests, and said that a major step towards this goal would
be for on Premier David Bartlett to implement the Tasmania Together
targets of ending clearfelling in Tasmania's high conservation value
forests.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the root cause of the violence in
Tasmania's forests is the Bartlett government's deliberate
prioritisation of roading and logging activities in contentious areas of
Tasmania's magnificent high conservation value forests.
"Former Labor Premier Jim Bacon promised to implement all of the
Tasmania Together recommendations, but failed to do so, and for Mr
Bartlett to act would be a demonstration of leadership and connection to
the community," Mr McKim said.
"Tasmania Together was the largest ever community consultation process
in Tasmania, and is loudly touted by Labor when it suits them. The
government should be upholding former Premier Jim Bacon's commitment to
meet all the recommendations, not just the ones which are politically
expedient."
"The best way to end the conflict in Tasmania's forests is for the
government to cease logging in Tasmania's magnificent high conservation
value forests as recommended by the Tasmania Together process."
Mr McKim said that the sight of the firebombed and axe-marked vehicles
should cause Premier David Bartlett to review the comments he made in
the wake of the recent unacceptable violence towards forest defenders.
"Premier Bartlett had a go at the victims of the violence while I the
next breath sympathising with the contractors - hardly the kind of
comments that a clever, kind and connected' leader would make," Mr McKim
said.
