Media Alert - Saturday 13 December 2008
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon at Newcastle Save Our Rail meeting
What: Lee will attend and distribute leaflets at the Newcastle Save Our
Rail public meeting.
When: From noon, Saturday 13 December 2008
Where: Newcastle Leagues Club, National Park Street
Guest Speaker: Dr. Garry Glazebrook, UTS - Researcher in Sustainable
Transport and Urban Development
Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said:
"In the last week of NSW parliament the major parties voted against
debating a Greens motion calling on Premier Rees to retain the Newcastle
rail line to serve residents living in the Hunter.
“Liveable modern cities around the world have made rail the heart of
their transit systems.
“The government should be investing in Newcastle rail services to
revitalise the city, but a big question mark now hangs over this bread
and butter service.
“Premier Rees must put community needs before the demands of a shopping
centre developer and keep the line, not cut it.
