Greens: PM should boost public transport spending
The Australian Greens are calling on the Federal Government to increase
its investment in public transport, with the Prime Minister due to
announce more infrastructure spending later today.
"The Prime Minister has said this morning that the government may be
pumping more money into public infrastructure to try and give the
economy a boost. Kevin Rudd should seize the opportunity to recognise
that by investing in environmental outcomes like public transport and
energy efficiency, the government can achieve an economic benefit," said
the Greens Transport Spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam.
"The lack of adequate public transport infrastructure forces many
Australians to drive. This is costly from an individual perspective and
costly for the environment as well. The community is calling out for
greener, affordable transport options. By investing in public transport
Mr Rudd can provide those options."
"Around the world, from US President-elect Obama to British Prime
Minister Gordon Brown, people are recognising that with a 'Green New
Deal,' we can build our way out of the financial meltdown, while
preventing the climate meltdown," concluded Senator Ludlam.
Last week Senator Ludlam initiated the first ever Senate Inquiry into
public transport in Australia and has been a long time campaigner for
public transport.
