The Tasmanian Greens today demanded that federal Environment Minister
Peter Garrett rule out granting any extensions to Gunns Ltd's deadline
for submitting pulp mill information for assessment by the federal
government.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that Gunns has continually failed to
meet deadlines throughout various different assessment processes, and
that Mr Garrett should draw a line in the sand and withdraw his support
for the proposal if current timelines are not met.
"If Gunns wants an extension then let them ask for it, and if they do
ask then Mr Garrett should just say 'no'," Mr McKim said.
"Mr Garrett deciding to contact Gunns to see if an extension is required
reminds me of Paul Lennon jumping in his limousine and driving up to
Launceston to see John Gay - it is undignified and shows far too much
respect to a company that has shown no respect to Tasmania's forests or
people."
"The best thing that Mr Garrett could do for the Tasmanian community is
to put this project out of its misery by refusing to extend the current
deadlines."
