The Tasmanian Greens today said they were saddened to learn that Cadbury
had left up to 700 workers wondering whether they may be amongst the
eventual 160 to lose their jobs, describing that approach as "lacking
empathy."
The Greens have reiterated their calls for a joint state and federal
support and training transition package.
Greens Member for Denison, Cassy O'Connor MP, said that in relying on
the company to do the right thing by the workers, it appears that the
Bartlett government is trying to duck the issue and buck-pass
responsibility.
"There must be an atmosphere of real distress and uncertainty at Cadbury
today, and it looks certain to continue for some time," Ms O'Connor
said.
"The Bartlett government can and should be more sympathetic and
proactive in assisting Cadbury workers."
"It could, for starters, express more concern for the workers and then
get on with the job of formulating a transition strategy, and lobbying
the Federal Labor Government for practical and financial support."
"Cadbury has told its entire workforce that 160 of them would not have a
job to go to next year, but have left them all to wonder and worry
whether it is their job that is to go, which is a cruel way to pass on
difficult news."
"Given that this is the company's approach to worker management, how can
the State Labor government buck-pass responsibility for those workers'
future options, and simply rely on Cadbury to 'do all they can to
assist'?"
"These workers need to know where they can go for support and
assistance, and sadly it appears that the Labor is telling them, 'don't
come to us', which is a terrible let down."
