The Tasmanian Greens today called on both State and Federal government
to put in place a training transition and support package to aid the 160
permanent workers at Hobart's Cadbury chocolate factory, who have just
been informed that they will lose their jobs from next year.
Greens Member for Denison, Cassy O'Connor MP, said that these jobs
losses will be a huge blow to the workers and their families, and will
be felt in Denison, but she believes that people will get back on their
feet with appropriate government assistance and support.
"My heart goes out to those Cadbury workers who have discovered today,
that through no fault of their own, their jobs will no longer exist from
next year. The Greens are calling for both the State and Federal
governments to provide a joint support and training package to
facilitate a transition to other forms of employment," Ms O'Connor said.
"The Cadbury factory at Claremont has a special place in the life of
Hobart so it is sad to see the company wind back its operations to the
extent it is cutting its workforce."
"However, we do know that these changes will not come into effect until
next year, so both the State and Federal government's need to act
swiftly and make the most of the opportunity to make available
retraining and employment strategies for the affected workers."
