The Tasmanian Greens today raised in Parliament the Bartlett
government's failure to provide an official public response to the
Select Committee into Housing Affordability Report that was published on
April 15 this year, detailing what action they intend to take on any of
the Report's recommendations, despite the critical need to act on the
housing affordability crisis.
Greens Shadow Housing spokesperson Tim Morris MP said that despite the
Minister for Health and Human Services welcoming the report at the time
and promising to consider its findings, four months later the government
still has not provided any form of public statement on whether it
accepts all or any of the recommendations.
"It is clear that the Bartlett Labor Government is so distracted by its
own internal problems that it appears incapable of dealing with what is
the major concern for several thousand Tasmanian families who are on the
waiting list for Public Housing, trying to get homes to rent or even
trying to build new homes, or even outlining its position to the most
comprehensive set of recommendations provided in decades," Mr Morris
said.
"The failure to provide a public response to the recommendations
contained within the Report into Housing Affordability in Tasmania, that
was released four months ago as well as the failure to follow through on
the former Premier's allocation of $60 million to be immediately
available for public housing, shows that this government is not serious
about housing and addressing housing affordability issues."
