Greens win best ever result in Territory election

The Greens in the Northern Territory received an average vote of 15.9%
across the six seats contested, up from an average of 9.5% in the 2005
Territory Election, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"In the electorate of Nightcliff candidate Emma Young polled 23.6%, the
Greens highest ever primary vote in the Northern Territory, up from
15.7% in 2005.This seat is now within reach at the next election with
fewer than 200 votes required for this to happen," Senator Brown said.

"In another first, Greens Alderman Jane Clark received 14.8% in the seat
of Braitling, coming second in the primary vote count to the CLP and
outpolling Labor by 3.5%. It is the first time the Greens have contested
Braitling and the first time we have outpolled Labor in the NT," Senator
Brown said.

Senator Brown said that in Greatorex, Greens candidate Lenny Aronsten
polled 18.4% just 1% behind the ALP candidate and up 7% from 2005. In
Port Darwin, Gary Abbott polled a strong 15.6% where the campaign
focused on Harbour protection. In Araluen, Linda Chellew polled 13.5%
just behind ALP government official John Gaynor (up from 9.5% in 2005).
In Daly, Dave Pollock polled 7.9% from a field of four where
land-clearing is an issue, almost doubling the Greens 2005 result in
this seat.

"In Alice Springs, where the Cameco Uranium issue was a strong feature
of the Greens campaign across the three seats, (Braitling, Araluen and
Greatorex) we matched the ALP vote, and on the day beat the ALP in 4 of
the six fixed Booths," Senator Brown said.

"This is a strong result for the Greens and voters in Mayo, Lyne and
Western Australia who want real action on climate change and to restore
the health of the Murray-Darling Basin will have a great Greens option
at the polls," Senator Brown said.
