MEDIA RELEASE
Pension increase can't wait until next March
Monday 11th August 2008
"The Greens are calling for a boost to the maximum single pension rate
of $30 per week to be enacted immediately," said Senator Rachel Siewert
today.
"It is high time the Rudd Government to put in place measures that
ensure a reasonable standard of living for older Australians," she said.
"We don't need to wait for yet another review to tell us that its time
to increase the aged pension."
The release today of the background paper for the Federal Government's
review of the aged pension simply confirms the findings of a Senate
Inquiry in March this year that many aged pensioners are doing it tough,
and that single pensioners - and particularly single women - are one of
the most disadvantaged groups in our society.
"While the Government's review can provide an opportunity to finesse
arrangements and ensure better equity, this is not an excuse to delay
urgent action on pensions," said Senator Siewert.
"We need to fix the main priority areas now to help out those we know
are doing it tough, by boosting the single pension rate - and leave it
to next year's review to fine-tune the details," she said.
"With the winter cold biting into the cost of living with rising heating
costs, now is the time to act," she concluded.
