Less talk more action Mr Downer

26.09.07

Minister Downer should spend less time talking about Burma and more time
looking at Australian investments in Burma Greens Senator Kerry Nettle
said today.

Senator Nettle joined a Free Burma protest in Sydney's Martin Place and
a march to the office of Prime Minister John Howard today.

"The whole world is talking about what is happening in Burma, but we
need less talk and more action," Senator Nettle said today.

"It is unlikely the UN Security Council will take substantial action,
because of China and Russia's veto so it is up to countries like
Australia to show leadership."

"Mr Downer and the government should immediately suspend security
cooperation with Burma and put in place real sanctions."

"We know that Australian oil companies and timber interests are
operating in Burma and both these industries underpin the regime. The
Foreign Minister should be looking at what Australian companies are
doing there."

"We are on the brink of another massacre unless countries like Australia
do all we can to bring sustained pressure to bear on the Burmese
regime."

"Words are not enough, we need action."

Australia's Danford Equities Corporation signed a production-sharing
contract with Myanmar's state-owned gas enterprise for oil and gas
exploration at the end of last year.
