Native forests disappear without trace

The Auditor General’s Office has brought down a damning report today exposing the failure of the Forest Products Commission (FPC) to track timber logged from native forest meet its monitoring and compliance obligations according to Southwest MLC, Paul Llewellyn.

“It’s a complete shambles,” said Mr Llewellyn. “Some 630,000 tonnes of log timber worth $44 million has been harvested from our native forests in the last financial year but the FPC doesn’t even know how many logs are taken out of the forest, how many have been stolen or whether the logs have been correctly graded.”

“The Auditor General’s Office has found that FPC has a reasonable framework for monitoring and compliance, the extent of monitoring is low.”

Mr Llewellyn said the report called into question the ability of the FPC.
