Disability Day of Action

Tuesday 25th September 2007

The Australian Greens today put their support behind the National CSTDA
Community Alliance day of action.

Today, across Australia people with a disability, their families and
supporters will be holding VIGILS calling for a fair go for people with
a disability and their families!

"People with a disability and their families continue to go without the
basic necessary support and services that should be there," said
Senator Siewert. "The Howard Government's recent offer to match state
funding for accommodation and respite services is a start. The apparent
withdrawal of that offer, without notice, was bitterly disappointing."

"The Government's commitment, through the 'Commonwealth Assistance
Package', to provide accommodation and respite support services to
adults with disabilities still being cared for by older parents was
welcomed, and will be of great assistance. This in no way, however,
takes away from the need for Commonwealth assistance for the great
majority of people with a disability not included in this group," said
Senator Siewert.

"There is still a huge amount of work left to be done in this area, and
groups such as the National CSTDA Community Alliance are showing us
there are large gaps in the system. This Government needs to take
immediate action to address the problems affecting people with
disabilities," she concluded.
