Esperance Port Pays Peanuts for Polluting
Greens claim polluters must pay their way
Theres something wrong with the way we do business in WA when Esperance Port pays just $1,125 for license fees to cover environmental compliance and $25,000 in 2005 for financial compliance, claimed South West Greens MLC Paul Llewellyn.
WA business gets away with polluting and damaging our environment because the government doesnt charge them enough to pay for an effective environmental watchdog.
If we want environmentally compliant industries we need to adopt the user pays principle and demand the same compliance standards used in financial management.
Its fair and reasonable to expect companies that benefit financially from an activity that may present negative community and environmental outcomes to pay the full cost of their compliance.
If such charges had been in place, they would have presented far less cost to business and community than the compensation that taxpayers are now having to fund. Not to mention the angst it would have saved the community of Esperance.
The Minister must take immediate action to support his own department by charging companies realistic license fees.
