Canadian PM gets Tasmanian eagle

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has received a Tasmanian
Wedge-tailed eagle brooch from Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown.

Welcoming Mr Harper to Australia, Senator Brown said that the giant
threatened eagle is a symbol of the campaign to save Tasmania's wild
forests from a pulp mill. He called on Prime Minister Harper to end the
destruction of British Columbia's ancient forests.

Mr Harper said that Canada had protected some of the forests but Senator
Brown, a colleague of Canadian Greens Leader Elizabeth May, told Mr
Harper that he had not completed the job of saving the forests.

"Australia and Canada have both agreed to aim for the end of forest
destruction to help halt climate change. Both nations need to get their
own backyard in order first," Senator Brown said.
