Pulp mill stinks - voters
Gunns' proposed chemical pulp mill in Tasmania's Tamar Valley stinks
with Australian voters, according to a Galaxy poll released today by
Investors for the Future of Tasmanian Inc.
In the first national poll on the pulp mill, a two-to-one majority of
those surveyed by Galaxy oppose the construction of the mill and, of
those, 64 per cent say the issue will influence the way they vote.
"This poll shows how much Australian concern for the environment is
motivating voters. Gunns' pulp mill is a litmus test for all parties as
the national election approaches. Voters see there are alternatives for
the mill but none for the Tamar Valley's environment or Tasmania's wild
forests," Greens leader Bob Brown said today.
"Both major parties in Canberra need to contend with their pro-logging
Tasmanian rump before the election and dump the mill," Senator Brown
said.

Poll results:
* Overall, 41% of voters throughout Australia oppose the
building of a new pulp mill in the Tamar Valley.
* In contrast, only 21% are in favour of the development
and 38% are uncommitted.
* The building of the pulp mill is likely to be
influential for as many as 37% of voters at the next election. However,
those opposed to the pulp mill are the most motivated and for 64% of
this group the development will influence the way they will vote.
* Older voters are more likely to oppose the pulp mill.
Among those aged 35 years and older 46% oppose the development.
