MP Pay Rises - If Bracks can do it, why can't Rann?
Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called on the Rann Government to match the
action of Victorian Premier Steve Bracks, who has indicated he will
limit the automatic flow on in pay increases to state MP's.
"We are the masters of our own destiny. We can change the rules.
Saying it is out of our hands in simply wrong," Mr Parnell said.
It is reported in today's Herald Sun newspaper:
But Victorian state MPs would get only a 3.25 per cent increase, a
spokeswoman for Premier Steve Bracks said. This was in line with the cap
imposed on public service pay increases.
We understand the Victorian Bracks Government will introduce legislation
to ensure any pay rise for Victorian MPs will be limited to 3.25%
"If Steve Bracks can do it, why can't Mike Rann?
"I have already instructed Parliamentary Counsel to draft a Private
Members Bill for me to do two things:
1. Break the automatic link with Federal salaries
2. Give State MPs the opportunity to reject recommended pay rises.
"I sincerely hope both the Labor and Liberal parties here in SA take
their lead from Steve Bracks and put a stop to this automatic flow on in
State MP's salaries," he said
