Traditional Owners Speak Out:
No radioactive waste dump in the NT

National Speaking Tour Canberra Public Meeting June 21, 6pm Legislative
Assembly, Civic

(Tom Kantor Fund), Friends of the Earth, Australian Student Environment
Network, The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, Medical Association for
the Prevention of War, The Wilderness Society, Nuclear Free Australia,
and the Northern Territory Government

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey is host to an important public meeting tonight
in the Legislative Assembly Reception Room.
 
Speakers will include Warlmanpa woman Dianne Stokes, Arrente Traditional
Owners Audrey McCormack and Benedict Stevens and Arrente women Mitch and
Priscilla Williams.

"The Federal Government gave an "absolute categorical assurance" prior
to the last election that the NT would not be targeted for a Federal
radioactive waste dump. In that context we should remember Science
Minister Julie Bishop's  remark that "all the sites in the NT are well
away from houses... some distance from any form of civilisation" Dr
Foskey said today.

"What does this say about the government's recognition of traditional
land holders?"

"It is no wonder that traditional owners believe they have a lot to
communicate to the 'uncivilised' people in the cities of Australia. I
urge the media and members of our broader community to come along" Dr
Foskey said.
