Human rights trampled in Indonesian treaty decision
21.06.07
Greens Senator Nettle condemned a decision of Parliament's Joint
Standing Committee on Treaties to back a controversial security treaty
with Indonesia.
"Once again unfounded claims about the national interest have overridden
concerns for human rights," Senator Nettle said.
"Labor and the government have rebuffed the cry for help of the West
Papuan people."
"It is clear from evidence to the committee that the treaty requires
Australia to repudiate the West Papuan's desire for self-determination.
This evidence has been ignored."
"The recommendations of the committee amount to little more than window
dressing of a sell-out of human rights."
"This treaty is not the end of the matter. Despite what the treaty says
West Papuans will continue to campaign for freedom."
"The Greens are also concerned about the possible implications for
cooperation with Indonesia on nuclear technology." Senator Nettle said.
