Government should mark 1967 invasion anniversary by ending arms exports
to Israel
05.06.07
Today's 40 year anniversary of Israel's occupation of the West Bank and
Gaza is an opportunity to suspend Australia's arms exports to Israel,
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said today.
Speaking at a forum on the Middle East tonight, Senator Nettle will
argue for a new even handed approach to the Palestinian-Israeli
conflict.
"Australia's million dollar trade with Israel should end." Senator
Nettle said:
"For 40 years Australia has played the role of cheer leader for one side
of the conflict when it should have been working for a lasting peace in
the Middle East.
"We were sending arms to Israel during the recent war with Lebanon."
"We can't hope to play a role for peace and justice as long as we
continue to arm Israel."
NB Senator Nettle will speak at:
* A public protest marking 40 years of occupation of
Palestinian land this Saturday at 1Pm at Sydney Town Hall, and;
* Will be debating the US Consul General about US Foreign
Policy at Marrickville Town Hall at 303 Marrickville Road from 7:30PM
tonight.
