Arts Sector Needs Funding Guarantee Not Cuts

The NSW government’s proposed funding cuts to Sydney’s museums and
arts bodies are shortsighted and counter-productive, according to NSW
Greens MP and Arts spokesperson, Sylvia Hale.

“Sydney’s museums, galleries and artistic companies are an
important part of the city’s cultural life and the education of our
children as well as a major contributor to the city’s tourism
industry,” said Ms Hale.

“The government derives a great deal of revenue from tourism to this
city so cutting funding to institutions that attract many tourists does
not make economic sense.”

“Other states, like Victoria, recognise the importance of the arts to
promoting their capital and regional cities and are increasing funding
and upgrading facilities. Meanwhile the myopic NSW government is
proposing to do the opposite, slashing funds and restricting opening
hours.”

“While Melbourne’s upgraded cultural establishments are full of
people, Sydney’s will be closed one day per week to save costs.”

“What our museums and arts bodies need is guaranteed long-term
funding so they can plan and build their programs and exhibitions. “

“The government should be exploring ways of making that guaranteed
long-term funding available rather than engaging in shortsighted and
counter-productive cutbacks,” concluded Ms Hale.
