MEDIA ALERT
31 July 2007

What: Greens MP Lee Rhiannon joins demonstration organised by Rising
Tide Newcastle to protest Labor’s coal expansion in NSW.

Where: Assembling outside fountain at Customs House, Newcastle, parade
will march to Wheeler Place.

When: 12:00pm, Tuesday 31 July 2007

Greens MP and spokesperson for Mineral Resources and the Hunter region,
Lee Rhiannon said:

"NSW Labor will be feeling the heat today over their decision to expand
coal exports and drive climate change.

“It’s not too late for Labor to reverse its stance and start
investing in clean alternative energy solutions.

“Labor’s subservient relationship with the coal industry is
jeopardising the Hunter’s economic and environmental future.

“The coal industry used its power over Labor to get the third coal
loader approved. Now people power must try to shut it down.

“Hunter workers should be offered new jobs in sustainable industries
rather than being locked into polluting industries of yesteryear.

“There is a groundswell of support for the move away from polluting
coal towards investing in renewable energy.

“I look forward to hitting the streets and demanding real action on
climate change.
