Paid Maternity leave too expensive for Labor

22 July 2007

Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle commented on the extraordinary
concession by Ms Tanya Plibersek, the ALP shadow Minister for women who
said on this morning's Channel Ten "Meet the Press" program that the ALP
did not support paid maternity leave because it would be too expensive.

"The ALP and Government are letting women down." Senator Nettle said.

"A recent Newspoll showed that around 78% of Australians want paid
maternity leave.

"Australia and the USA are the only OECD countries not to have a uniform
system of paid maternity leave.

"A paid parental leave system should be government funded, particularly
as our budget surpluses have never been bigger.

"The Greens support a government funded paid paternity leave scheme of
18 weeks with an additional 34 weeks unpaid leave and the option of
returning to work part time." Senator Nettle said.
