Look beyond desal Karlene

Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called on Water Security Minister Karlene
Maywald to broaden her overseas study tour beyond desalination plants to
include other water technology options such as recycled water and water
re-use.

"Instead of focusing only on desalination, Minister Maywald's trip
should also check out world's best practice in water re-use, recycling
and efficiency. She might find that a lot of the expertise is in fact
right here at home in South Australia.

"Desalination is not the solution to our water woes.

"We should exhaust re-use and recycling technologies first, and capture
much more of our rainwater, before we artificially manufacture new
water.

"It makes sense to fix up the system first. As soon as we pump new
water in, much of it will be wasted on in-efficient appliances, poor
priorities and burst pipes.

"South Australia can and should be a world leader in water saving.
Let's focus on doing better with what we have before we try and make new
water - and then flush that expensive water into a system that leaks
like a sieve.

"And why spends huge amounts of money and energy converting sea water
when we flush most of our good, clean rainwater away?" he said.
