Nurses' Strike: MPs reaping what they sow

The State Government should immediately move to cap MP salary rises
before calling for similar restraint from nurses and other public sector
workers, says Greens MLC Mark Parnell.

"Minister Wright lost all moral authority over wages when he and his
colleagues accepted a pay rise well above inflation.

"How can nurses not look at what MP's have got in their pay packets,
without even asking, and think: 'this isn't fair'.

"Steve Bracks in Victoria has capped MP's salaries to match public
sector wage freezes - why can't we do the same?

The Greens MLC will introduce a private member's bill when Parliament
resumes to break the automatic link between Commonwealth and State MP
salary rises.

"Australians can smell hypocrisy a mile away. If the Government wants
wage restraint, they should start with their own pay packets," he said.
