Bracks Tax Cuts for Gas Guzzlers
Stamp duty tax cuts for cars at the large end of the market will be a
disaster for the environment, say the Greens.
Greens MLC Greg Barber said, "It's a $1200 tax cut if you buy a gas
guzzler, nothing if you buy a small car."
"If the government has a spare couple of hundred million, it should think
about freezing public transport fares, which have grown twice as fast
under this government as the total cost of running a car," Mr Barber said.
"These large cars would probably put an additional three quarters of a
tonne of CO2 into the air each year, compared to an average car," Mr
Barber said.
"The average passenger car uses about 11 litres of fuel every 100
kilometres. Small cars and hybrids use half that. But small cars don't
benefit from these changes to the stamp duty tax rates as they are already
cheaper than the lowest tax threshold," Mr Barber said.
