NSW Greens MP Sylvia Hale today welcomed the decision to establish a parliamentary inquiry into the operation of the Home Building Service of the Office of Fair Trading.

The inquiry will look at the handling of complaints about poor building work on people’s homes.

“I have been pushing for this inquiry for some time,” said Ms Hale.

“There have been many complaints from home owners who have lost tens of thousands of dollars because of shonky building work on their houses.”

“They believe the Office of Fair Trading has failed to protect them and I think their complaints should be properly investigated by a parliamentary inquiry,” she said.

“The inquiry is needed to look in detail at the builder licensing system and the home warranty insurance scheme.”

“It will provide an opportunity to examine whether complaints have been adequately addressed by the Office of Fair Trading and whether proper building standards have been enforced,” Ms Hale said.
