Opals should get national reception


Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today called on the Prime Minister to
organise a national reception for Australia's world champion women's
basketball  team the Opals.

'The Opals achievement is fantastic for Australia, for Australian sport
and for Australian women's sport. They deserve recognition on a national
scale," Senator Nettle said.

"I have written to the Prime Minister asking him to organise an event to
show the nations appreciation of their efforts.

"I have also contacted The Greens Deputy Mayor of the City of Sydney to
see if a reception or parade can be organised in Sydney.

"We have seen ticker tape parades for the Sydney Swans, the world
champion Wallabies, the Australian men's cricket world champions so why
not the Opals?

"Women's sport does not receive as much support as men's sport in
Australia which makes the achievement of the Opals all the more
impressive. Let's start turning that around by offering the Opals proper
recognition of their win.

"I hope something can be arranged so that the success of this great
Australian women's sporting team can get the publicity it deserves."
