Spending cap for elections rejected
The Government and Opposition last night blocked a Greens attempt to place conditions on public funding of electoral expenses.
The Greens moved an amendment that would have introduced an election spending cap for parties accepting funding.
"Im disappointed that the major parties didnt accept our improvements to the Bill" said Greens MLC Giz Watson.
"I'm concerned that without a spending cap public funding will increase advertising budgets rather than reducing reliance on private donations".
Other amendments moved by the Greens, and rejected by the major parties, included a requirement that political parties lodge annual returns detailing their income and expenditure.
