Greens welcome Murdoch empire's shift on global warming
The Australian Greens welcome the Murdoch media empire's admission that
it was wrong on global warming and look forward to the News Corp media
at last taking seriously the climate crisis posed by global warming.
"In June this year Rupert Murdoch invited Al Gore to a meeting of News
Corp board members to discuss climate change," Australian Greens climate
change spokesperson Senator Christine Milne said in Canberra today.
"At that time the Greens expressed the hope that Rupert Murdoch would
use the power of News Corp worldwide to raise awareness of the enormity
and immediacy of the global warming threat.
"The London Sun embarking on a campaign entitled 'Go Green with the Sun'
is powerful and timely and I look forward to The Australian and other
Murdoch publications following suit in Australia.
"Recognising the power of the Murdoch media empire, Prime Minister John
Howard will not want to go into an election year on the wrong side of
the debate.
"Whilst Prime Minister Howard has dug himself and the nation into a hole
on climate change after a decade of stubborn refusal to address the
problem, he'll now have to admit he is wrong.
"The Greens look forward to the Howard government embracing multilateral
action on climate change, and listening to progressive voices in
Australia calling for a national greenhouse gas emissions target and a
trading system underpinned by a price on carbon dioxide emissions."
