Al Gore lavishes praise on world's best climate change spin
Al Gore is right to praise Mike Rann's rhetoric on climate change, says
Greens MLC Mark Parnell. There's absolutely no doubt it is up there with
the world's best.
"Unfortunately, current government greenhouse priorities and actions
suggest the rhetoric has not been backed by action. We are treading
water at best instead of forging ahead.
"One project, the Olympic Dam expansion, will wipe out pretty much all
our greenhouse gains, the Penola Pulp Mill is about to be approved
without an EIS despite increasing the State's greenhouse gas emissions
by 7%, and Mike Rann is planning to spend much more money on extending
freeways than trams.
"The 'world leading' climate change legislation has no teeth but plenty
of worthy sentiments and targets that will kick in when Mike Rann is in
a nursing home.
"Even our much celebrated leadership in wind and solar is likely to be
overtaken by Victoria as they institute their own mandatory renewable
energy target (MRET), while Mike Rann rests on historical results which
have more to do with the Federal Government's MRET and high electricity
prices, than anything Mike Rann has done.
"Al Gore is a politician and he knows politicians respond to flattery.
Let's hope Premier Rann will justify Al Gore's praise by setting a state
MRET, otherwise Steve Bracks will be replacing him on Al Gore's
Christmas card list in the not too distant future," he said.
