ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey MEDIA RELEASE

31 May 2006
Childcare and schools
ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has congratulated the government for changing its position on childcare at Lyons Primary School.
"Ever since the Government's eviction of Teddy Bears childcare from the old North Curtin school came up last year, the Greens have been calling for the extra space in Lyons Primary School to be considered" Dr Foskey said today.
"Now, almost one year and a new Minister later, the ACT Government has appears to have got the message."
"There are some real benefits that can come with the co-location of early childhood services; and the Lyons School, close to Woden Centre, is a perfect site for such a project."
"In amongst all the bluster about supposedly 'empty desks' there are real opportunities for schools and communities."
"An early childhood centres and a southside campus for the cooperative school are just two of the many possibilities."
"Rivett School playing host to Warehouse Circus - providing facilities and space for a valuable arts activity for young people which enriches the school curriculum and running programs with it - is another example, which is already up and running."
"The key word here is co-location. It is not about the replacement of primary schools" Dr Foskey said.
