Greens support energy levy - and improved energy efficiency
Last night in Parliament the Greens successfully moved an amendment to
the government's Energy Safety Bill to promote energy efficiency in
Western Australia.
The Greens amendment ensures that part of the $4.4 million expected to
be raised from the levy can be spent on enforcing energy efficiency
standards on household appliances.
"Studies show that improvements in the efficiency of lighting and
appliances can result in energy savings of between one third and one
half, " said Greens MLC for the South West, Paul Llewellyn.
"If we can do this it would make a big contribution to reducing
greenhouse gas emissions in Western Australia.
"The Director of Energy Safety already does some work in this area,
but it needs to be expanded and our amendment will support that
expansion."
