Greenhouse disjunction disorder
ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has pointed to a disjunction between Government policy and the problems crated by Global Warming.
"The Murrumbidgee is expected to shrink by 50% due to climate change and increasing droughts, as the Canberra Times reported today" Dr Foskey said.
"Yet we understand the Commonwealth Government is slashing staff in the Greenhouse Office. We can expect something similar in the ACT as everything Mr Stanhope has said indicates that the environment, like the community sector, will feel the pinch."
"Meanwhile, the extra money for the Murray Darling Basin, which the Commonwealth was so pleased to announce recently, while welcome, addresses the symptoms but not the cause."
"I see this as a psychological condition which prevents people from connecting what is happening to them with what they do. A kind of disjunction disorder."
"That would appear to be the problem we face with Greenhouse Gas policy in Australia and the ACT. Everyone can see what is happening, but Government policy doesn't deal with the problem."
"The ACT for example is worried about water. But, at the same time, it is dragging its feet on climate change."
"It is clear to everyone else that water policy and climate change are interconnected. While we've acted on water, without measures to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions these actions will be a drop in the rising ocean" Dr. Foskey said.
