Greens: Take endangered species off the menu
19th May 2006
Senator Rachel Siewert has welcomed the release of the second edition of
the 'Sustainable Seafood Guide', launched by the Australian Marine
Conservation Society (AMCS).
"With Australians now annually eating an average of 21kg of seafood per
person, it is more important than ever that we pay attention to the
kinds of seafood we eat and where it comes from."
The guide notes that the number of fish species classified as
'overfished' has risen from just five in the early 1990s to seventeen in
2004.
"Our appetite for seafood is putting serious pressure on the marine
environment, particularly slow-growing species like Orange Roughy."
"The plight of the Orange Roughy should sound a warning of the dangers
of unregulated deep water trawling, which is devastating marine
ecosystems," Senator Siewert said. "There is solid evidence supporting
30% no-take zones across all marine ecosystems to allow proper recovery
of these species before we take them past the point of no return."
"The Sustainable Seafood guide is a positive way to increase awareness
of the fragile marine environment," Senator Siewert said.
