Greens to Renew Local Push for Light Rail in Eastern Sydney
Greens will be calling on Randwick Council to renew the pressure
for transport action in the Eastern Suburbs following news that
the State Government has been sitting on a report recommending the
implementation of Light Rail in the CBD.
"The Greens have been calling for the return of light rail for
a decade and a half", Greens Councillor and Greens NSW Transport
spokesperson, Bradley Hughes said.
"The article in today's Sydney Morning Herald makes it clear that
the State Government has failed to recognize the need to completely
change its negative attitutude to light rail.
"The Greens will put a motion to Randwick Council calling on the
Iemma Government to abandon its obstructionist approach - and we
will be seeking support from the Labor Councillors when we do",
Cr Hughes said.
The Sydney Morning Herald claims that the transport report had been
kept secret since 2004.
"The secrecy is unhelpful, but typical of the negative attitude
the Carr/Iemma Government has always had towards public transport
options. Bob Carr was always happy to build a new motorway",
Randwick Deputy Mayor, Murray Matson said.
